Jiani D. Steele is a Bridgeport, Connecticut native.Currently holding a B.A. in Psychology with the dream of pursuing her Doctorate’s in the near future.
For most of her life, Jiani struggled with the mental battle of depression, suicidal thoughts, and therapy. After the unexpected loss of her son in 2013, she decided it was time to seek Traditional Therapy. Though talking to someone helped, it wasn't enough to make the depression subside. One thing therapy did help her realize was dance was her best way of expressing herself. Jiani danced her whole life and originally went to college for dance therapy to help others not noticing how much dance helped her. Shortly after the loss, Jiani developed an interest in writing, but never shared her writing. One day she was put in the spot light by a family member at a poetry event. She shared a poem called " Inside the mind of a childless Mother" which was about the loss of her son. Though it was hard to fight the tears that came with the performance, the relief she felt after the performance was more beneficial than all therapy sessions combined. Slowly but surely, Jiani began to realize Traditional Therapy wasn't the best way to express herself. She began expressing herself creatively more often and realized writing her feelings or dancing her emotions was a better outlet. Seeing the effects the Creative Arts has had on herself, she believes others may feel the same way. Facing many life obstacles, Jiani hopes to take her hurt from the past and use it for someone’s healing in the future. Inspirational speaking wasn’t something she could ever see herself doing. But as people began to hear her story the more opportunity she was given to do so the more she began to realize her God given purpose in life, which was to help others heal. With such a wide range of experiences to overcome Jiani hopes her story will help someone find their voice just as her journey to self-love has helped her find her own.
